So refreshing to see MCH have a chance to actually ACT.
I said the exact same thing last year. I was like "Two Serial Killers Fall in Love" in an amazing writing prompt, but Dex and Hannah sound like Middle School kids when they talk about how much they love each other. It's baffling how dull the two of them are.
Boom. Nailed it!
Considering the overwhelmingly positive response to season 4s end, I'd say bleakness wasn't a problem.
But then Harrison sublet it to Cassie without even telling his dad.
So like someone pointed out in the comments last week, the Vogel/Oliver story is really a parallel to the Ice Truck Killer stuff from season 1 (Long lost serial killer relative wants to make a connection and reunite). Why did it work so damn well in season 1, but flop here? Let's do some spitballing:
Look on the bright side, you guys! No new episode next week!
That's been Dexter's spiel for a while now is to constantly tell us how important Harrison is to him while continuously showing that he doesn't give a rat's ass about Harrison.
Assuming you've never watched it before, then for God's sake just watch Breaking Bad or The Shield instead. Or if you insist on Dexter, just watch through season 4 and pretend that nothing else exists.

Have you read Catching Fire? I had to force myself to finish that book it was so boring. The movie might be able to fix some of the books flaws, but I'm not holding out hope.
@avclub-1a7c2ef0e8b01a0111af33d310e7c4f5:disqus It's probably not that much of a stretch. Look at the history of the show. In seasons 1-4, Daniel Cerone, Clyde Phillips, and Mellisa Rosenberg were showrunners and/or head writers. By the end of 4 they were all gone (I think Cerone left after season 2). Chip Johannessen…
lolwut
Ray Stevenson and Deb calling Dexter out on his shit were what made the first 3/4 of season 7 riveting. But even in the early episodes are hints of the shit that will overtake the season (The AWFUL end to the Louis storyline, the ridiculous Viking mask that one killer wore, etc.)
For real. Make it happen!
A+
Didn't Miguel's brother like attact Dexter after Miguel died and was all "Miguel told me that if he died, you would be the one who killed him." And then nothing happened.
Oh yeah! It made Dexter realize that he doesn't need the code…until he and the writers forgot that ever happened.
I agree. Him being like a kid in a candy store when learning about Dexter and the code was much more interesting than trying to make him into some psychotic "badass." So off course then he died.
