Maybe at this point Wes Anderson and Tim Burton should do a collaboration of their well worn quirks into one mind melty of a movie.

I think there was a little Obama analogue.
Namely with Travers disappearing and ending up with the president we wanted to avoid. Since Obama never lived up to the person he was built up to as a candidate, and continued on several things from the previous man that were wildly disliked.

All I've seen about the show are articles whining about the small audience and how people supposedly hate it because there are girls in it.

Why did Dallas get more viewers the Girls?
1. Dallas had an effective advertising campaign that people actually saw. 
2. Dallas is a recognizable brand name, that can cash in on the older audience
3. Dallas is on a basic cable channel and not a premium channel. So has a larger reach to begin with.

"The filmmakers mistakenly think nothing is silly if it’s done with a grim enough facial expression." seem to me like an intentional way of making things funny.

I agree, I thought it was a bit dour. There could have been more fun with the scenario. But I think with everyone being exposed to magic for 2 seasons (and more depending on character) that switching bodies was met with as much panic as if the bread had gone moldy.
