You could say that this is the first time where he actually feels like he could have had a normal life, as he had no one , it was/is a chance to start over. That's how I read it, at least.

Hey now, season six was pretty good. The main problem was too much stuff was being thrown at the wall, but not all of it was sticking in the grand scheme of things. But a lot of the episodes were good.

The driving thing doesn't really come off as odd. Technically speaking, without stopping overnight anywhere they could make it from Minneapolis to Phoenix in a day or two.

After eight seasons, I really wouldn't want any characters on any show to be exactly the same as they were in previous ones. Change/growth is typically a good thing to see, so that complaint is weird.
