That was the point of the haircut in the first two seasons, to make him look younger. He apparently likes having long hair, so I'm guessing by the time the show gets to season ten, he'll look like he could be in a thrash metal band.

Yeah, Purgatory was kinda disappointing, but at the same time I'd rather have that than some crappy green screen. And yeah, it would have probably made for a more interesting season if they kept Sam and Dean separated for a few episodes, but the I'm digging that they're going flashback route.
