I love you Mike!
I love you Mike!
He was white as a sheet…and he also made false teeth.
I was in the Teen Tournament when I was 14. (I lost.) It seems the basic layout of the audition process and the test hasn't changed much at all. But the swag is good: If you get on the show, you get more pens. And a T-shirt. And a hat.
Lush Life might be a little too long, but Samaritan is a good length. I've yet to read other Price besides those two, and would love to.
Black Swan Green (David Mitchell).
A Fan's Notes (Frederick Exley).
Music for Torching or The Safety of Objects (A.M. Homes).
Straight Man (Richard Russo).
Love Chris Bachelder, and would second either of his books. Pithy, short reads with lots of pop-cultural zing balanced by gentle critique. They'd be perfect for AV Club readers.
Well, damn.
I worked for one notable SF events website that shuttered this week. I was supposed to freelance for Decider, so now, I guess, I work for two.
@Sniffers: I used to feel the same way, but I couldn't help but be impressed by how he broke with his family and Mormon handlers (he's a direct descendant of Brigham Young) on the gay-marriage thing in CA. Look it up, it's pretty cool.
I saw A.I. in the theater when I was 11 or 12— and I was with my mom. Our relationship has always been difficult, and I was a complete fucking wreck for most of the last third of the movie. I cried for nearly two days after I saw it. She bought me ice cream to cheer me up, but I could barely force down a bite through…
First love (high school boyfriend). We used to cuddle on the floor and listen to "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea." The relationship ended amicably, but I can't listen to that album anymore.
Wow
This is an astounding week of releases— I can recommend all of these films, with a slight caveat on "Milk." Sean Penn is amazing, but the "lumpy, strung-together series of events" comment is right on. As moved as I was by Dustin Lance Black's Oscar speech, screenwriting is far from this movie's forte.
I agree that I was ambivalently moved.
Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana movie. She's the best of both worlds because she plays two people get it???!!!!
How has no one said "Stop Making Sense" yet?
Coen Brothers > Maysles Brothers > Hughes Brothers > Joyce Brothers > Smothers Brothers > Wayans Brothers > Lawrence Brothers > Jonas Brothers > Undercover Brother
Coraline
When I went to see Coraline two weeks ago, there was a (Cora?) line to get into the theater— I guess they were running the screenings pretty tightly. My friends and I got stuck next to some weirdo in line who kept telling us about "The Secret" and the "law of attraction" or whatever and how it totally works.…
Twice?
Agreed wholeheartedly. I can't remember a time when I thought SNL was consistently funny, all episode long. After watching the early seasons on DVD (great, but uneven), I think that time never existed.
Funny, but this episode (as well as the large number of commenters afflicted) actually did raise my awareness of canine epilepsy— I had no idea it was such a common problem.
Wellthen, search for the word "netbooks". You're in for a treat.
