I'd like to think so too, but (as a matter of pure anecdote) I haven't observed my friends who are all into punk/hardcore and play in local bands, talk or even evince awareness of punk-influenced indie rock bands.  They're all about, say, the new Converge or Title Fight, but I haven't heard them discuss or evince

Green Day and Offspring were gateway bands to Warped Tour acts in the 90s, like CIV, Sick of it All, H20, NOFX, Bad Religion, so I don't think the connection is too difficult to trace.

Well my older sister at the time was listening to Tori Amos, so you can see why little brothers in the 90s might have gravitated toward this music.

I think, as Murray indicates, it was when the image of Jackson started to take over the music.  To its credit, songs off of Bad are still recognized and get airplay today, like Man in the Mirror, Way You Make Me Feel, and Smooth Criminal.  No songs from Dangerous or HIStory have stood the test of time.  Dangerous can

Hank also paired it with a "5K," which from what I understand, is a sentence reduction in exchange for substantial assistance to the government's case under the federal sentencing guidelines.

The Salon review does rip into this episode for putting too many contrivances for the train heist to work, as well as in some other scenes.

"Rock has defeated a slew of hip-hop luminaries."  True.  But not Ice-T. Body Count was awesome.

I got a soft spot for The Long Way Around off that album.  Although I don't think Dixie Chicks were a terrible band to begin with.

Canibus - Shock Therapy. Best skit ever.

Although that's what made it funny.  Dre was louder than the girl he was fucking.

Ditto.  I thought this band was pretty good at making catchy pop rock - Plush, Vaseline, Big Empty, Big Bang Baby, Tripping on a Hole…, Sour Girl.  All good.

Picking songs by pop artists/one-hit wonders seems too easy, since you're really just
speaking of guilty pleasures.  Think of awful acts that have made what you feel, perhaps just once, a genuinely good song.

"Breaking the Habit" was actually pretty good as well.  Honestly, Linkin Park wasn't that bad at making catchy pop rock, but that rapper seemed far too monotone, and there's only so much of Chester Bennington's throat-screaming melodies, and self-pitying lyrics that you could take.

Their complaints, and this column, reminded of some older complaints about indie rock in the past.  Too white or too upper middle class.
