For what it's worth, I didn't read it that way at all; artists criticise their own society instead of, or as well as, others (if they're not going to look like a dick); this artist is turning a jaundiced satirical eye on America's history; the critic therefore only mentioned America.

Thanks for that

Edit: Sorry, you were talking about the Lee Ingleby young thug character, weren't you? Yeah, Brits move the stress to later in the word, because it feels more natural to us. It grows wild here, so I don't think we regard it as a specifically Italian plant and so anglicised the name slightly…

You're the second person this week to mention seeing The Goodies and Dave Allen on US public TV. I can't explain how hugely weird that seems to me.
I've always assumed that the last image my senile brain will remember on my deathbed will probably be that giant kitten trashing London.

Yes. My friends & I were talking about GG a couple of days ago, and how he occasionally turns up somewhere on TV or radio and is invariably the funniest & smartest person there.

I was reading about Siegel earlier; according to Wikipedia, at Warner in the 40s he "rose to head of the Montage Department, where he directed thousands of montages". I wonder if that's where he got that skill you're talking about, which might be about cutting as well as shooting… really must watch IotBS again.

The '78 one works for me, though I can see all kinds of things which might look stupid or over the top to someone else. "Loathe" is pretty strong, though - is it because you feel like it damages the original somehow? Remakes of loved originals feel like a personal insult sometimes…

Good review, especially the final paragraph.
