yeah, and they manage to make the Archdeacon plausible and kind of sympathetic while cheerfully carrying on with the running gag about him looking and acting like some kind of gangster. He was always one of my favorite things about the show.

Oh yeah, I agree absolutely - I was clumsily making a distinction between a) the 'unrealism' which consisted of technical implausibilities, gaps & plot holes, and b) the bizarre human reactions of the crew, which were the main problem.

That's it. The plot holes and technical implausibilities (the kind of thing I'm sure we've all willingly ignored before) are almost a distraction from the main problem, which was that no-one's words or actions seemed to have anything to do with what we could see on the screen (or what had recently happened).
