    I think it's unfair to say the Chris plot was about Hollywood. To me it felt like it was more of a commentary on the relationship between status, materialism and authenticity.

    you probably didn't go to state school. for some profs it's not even about getting positive evaluations, it's basically to develop a rep. If you don't have a lot else going for you,in terms of publishing, acquiring grants etc. being popular amongst students helps make up for it. it depends on the department but
