I think Huu was actually bending the vines. When convenient plot-wise, Avatar introduces someone who can bend the environment they are most connected to. This happens later with sand bending Tusken Raiders. Are there any other ones?

Absolutely, Dumbledore. And the robots were terribly out of place in such an otherwise fantastic world.
There was a PKD short story, "Electric Ant,"where an engineer realizes he's actually a robot, but rather than freak out, he begins to experiment with his sensory inputs and pre-coded perception of reality. It's a brilliant example a totally different and yet plausible vision of a common theme.
But isn't that what having Freeze as a villain accomplishes? He's a better foil for Batman (as a force of emotionless vengance) than a machine.
