yeah, he's like Wolverine (sans claws) in that regard, it's an autonomic response, not like everybody else who has a mental on/off switch with their abilities.  Maybe he thought the aging being retarded aspect of his ability was a willful act?  Will we find out next season that Pyper is replaced with a younger actor…
