Holy crap, Ghost was a BP nominee? I must have blocked that memory out.

The blurst of times?!

Welcome to the AV Club, Gary Groth!

@avclub-82dbf0e1f43223ffc175e63f2b2c3aa2:disqus Oh, believe me, there were plenty of other things that I found offensive (or at least very, very stupid) about Kick-Ass. The girlfriend subplot was simply the most fantastically blatant of them.

You're kidding. Adam and Eden? You have to be kidding.

How about that rape-y girlfriend subplot, huh? The protagonist lies about being gay so his love interest will let him rub lotion on her while she's half-naked, but once he comes clean she's totally fine with it anyway because he's a superhero? Blaugh.

Wasn't the whole point of KICK-ASS to deconstruct the "real-life superhero" fantasy by basically saying that it would be really difficult and violent and would turn you into a sociopathic weirdo? It failed at doing that, but at least it tried. This sequel looks like just another wish-fulfillment action movie for Star

I liked this far more than Triplets. People are right that it's more openly sentimental than Triplets is, but I don't see that as a problem. Its emotion never becomes saccharine or manipulative, and I found the greater emphasis on emotion to be a strength. As visually and aurally stunning as Triplets is, I've always

There's that early episode of THE SHIELD, with the criminal who keeps a fridge full of jars containing his own semen.

Nathan Johnson is, indeed, amazing. I like his score for Looper even more. True fact: most of the percussion on that soundtrack was produced using physical guns.

You forgot the punch line to that second exchange, @avclub-ea5d7ec524a9fdeab5026aa304dd21fc:disqus !

I really liked how, after one of Mike's analyses, Rian basically comes out and says, "Yeah, I really didn't put as much intentional thought into that choice as you're assuming I did." It's refreshing to encounter that kind of humility and frankness. It would have been easy for Rian to just let that go so he could look

See, I might have agreed with you at one point, but Looper convinced me that he can do just about anything. The guy had me convinced that he really was a young Bruce Willis, after all.

I think it's pretty clear by this point that @avclub-736c1908fbbb3c33c217dff33ec717ee:disqus , whatever his/her other virtues may be, isn't exactly a close-reading heavyweight when it comes to movies.

EENY OONY WANNA

I know that including it here is a bit of a cheat since it hasn't finished its run yet, but the entire series of Breaking Bad is my vote for this question. There are lots of other great TV shows, but BB is the only show that I would feel comfortable calling literally "perfect."

On the other hand, The Big Lebowski spawned an actual religion, with ordained priests and holy days and everything. I'd like to see Pulp Fiction match THAT.

High and Low is in my top-3 Kurosawa films, but there's no way it can beat Ran. Ran is perfection.

Have we finally discovered the secret alter ego of the Black Bolt??

"the venerable avant-garde filmmaker videotapes a well-dressed couple carrying oversized shopping bags, and when they ask what she’s doing, Friedrich answers that she’s just documenting “the rich new people” who’ve moved into the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, where Friedrich has lived since 1989."
