@avclub-cf50b28ef624912ff106c57ca9be41dc:disqus Yeah, that hissed "BITCH" literally made me gasp. It's so easy for modern viewers to dissociate from onscreen violence because we see it so much in movies these days, but that raw expression of hatred really broke through the numbness for me. For some reason, it made all

I pretty much agree with all of this; I just wanted to drop in and vent a little rage about Bane's fate. He was built up to be so cool and menacing and unstoppable, but we're just going to have a secondary character shoot him and then drop a quip? ARGH.

@avclub-654994917d3301946da8540d7d560004:disqus I really liked how the director staged that scene. It's both terrifying and hilarious when a naked Bateman charges out of the bedroom holding a running chainsaw precisely where his penis would be. Subtext!

I stared for too long at that guy's facial hair and now I am insane. Great Job, Internet!

Most of it's offscreen—you don't really see the axe/knife/chainsaw go in, etc.—but you get a good enough look at the mutilated aftermath for it to still be stomach-turning.

I like Mumford and Sons, but man do they ever look like massive goobers in that photo up top.

Depends on whether you like your fight scenes realistic (HAYWIRE) or intricately choreographed and over-the-top (THE RAID).

@eric827:disqus The problem isn't that Southerners are portrayed unsympathetically. The problem is that they're practically cartoons. The only way they could be more cartoonish would be if they were all wearing black hats and twirling their villainous mustaches.

Part of the problem is that I feel a bit inadequate to the task. I like digging deeper into the books I read, but IJ is one of those books that could have an entire college course devoted to it: unpacking various symbols, picking out recurring/important themes, etc. Hardcore literary analysis was not my forte when I

That book is high on my to-read list, @avclub-d892cfee412f049ca3da7ada13bcf9ff:disqus . I know almost nothing about DFW's personal life, and have only really gotten into him in the past few years. For me, he's one of those kindred-spirit writers that you only encounter once in a blue moon, and I'm curious to know if
