I haven't watched the show past the pilot, but this really saddens me - Allison Pill and Dev Patel are such terrific actors, and yet they get handed this treatment.

Pretty much. It also makes Walt saying to Jesse he's getting torn up over the kid even more implausible than it already was. If Jesse finds out Todd is now employed in his stead and Walt killed Mike, hell will break loose.
