It can be two things, as they say. He can both 1) not have a problem with women in movies and 2) have a blind spot for women-driven narratives. He can access whatever part of him understands women only so far as to allow them to be in service to a man and narrative based around that man's perspective. I don't see how

So people work with what they know, and what LGBT filmmakers know is filtering their own perspective through traditional gender narratives?

I think the point is that he's only rarely interested in women-driven stories. That demonstrates a pretty narrow perspective and belies a weakness of his craft.

That's such a weak reason. It's essentially excuse by incompetence. Plenty of artists have achieved an effective portrayal of some other sort than their own. Claiming this artist or that artist can't or doesn't feel comfortable even attempting it is the same as claiming they're weak in their craft.

Er, this is neither here nor there, but I don't think gander means what you think it means.

Ok, but Amistad isn't a weird example of anything here. It doesn't have a female lead.

Man, twas a joke.

Spoilers, for god's sake.

Nobody go and look at her crowdfunding page. There be monsters in the comments.

How come Al Franken always seems to be the next person on the schedule after these controversies? If I were a liberal comedian, I'd be wary of booking time with the guy.

No, but they did give a platform to a guy who claimed to be an expert.

Down to earth, you mean, except for the whole AIDS conspiracy thing.

Huh. The other day, a coworker came in with a shaved eyebrow, the consequence of passing out first at a party. Took me forever to figure out what was missing, though something clearly was.

I'd also like to know this.

That's not a reference to the band.

Were we ever?

This is a bit overthought. So initially, the viewer expects for the movie to humanize trolls, but in the end, "The point seems to be, instead, that we confront them, seeing them not as mere trolls but as sad, frequently lonely humans rooted in specific geographic and economic situations."

Best laid plans of mice and men, and all that.

Er, "barring" means "except for," or "unless." So you said there, "I promise you won't be disappointed in Art of Pizza, unless you actually like Chicago style Pizza." Which I think isn't what you were going for.

It's been considerably less time than 4 years that Radiohead played in the US. It hasn't even been a year.
