Film Criticism
I'm an aspiring film critic and letter grades, thumbs up/thumbs down, star system, what have you, is just a silly notion to me. I completely understand why they're there but I feel like they devalue the review and are oftentimes completely arbitrary. You get into exactly the kind of thing Modell talks

SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE

Biggs Darklighter > Jason Biggs

Skanye West

"Are you serious?"

"So it's a comedy?"

Threads like this make me lose faith in AV Club.

I met her on Monday…
…twas my lucky BUNday
you know what I mean.

Are we awake?
"Are we… black?"

If that's true, Michael Bay is also very stupid. A Scarlett nude scene would have made the studio far more money than the R-PG13 difference.

Godfather 3 better than 2?

Okay so she was the 4th best thing… but still…

Alan Moore
…is good.

To be quite frank with you, if youre even remotely close to deciding, go with America. Reason: I'm pretty sure two Marines could take down all the Mounties, and we'll show no quarter to Canadian sympathizers once we've taken back what's rightfully ours. Manifest Destiny is alive and well, motherfucker.

Some great picks here and some I've never heard of. It occurs to me that we're basically at the mercy of Criterion in terms of what they decide to release and even then we're shelling out 30+ bucks (I'm not complaining, Criterion always delivers a hell of a DVD). There really aren't any other significant companies

There is a little known Italian filmmaker that nobody ever mentions named Ermanno Olmi. He's fantastic, one of my favorite directors. Especially check out "Il Posto" and "Tree of the Wooden Clogs." Both masterpieces.

Gob's not on board.

Well, I wouldn't object to Pulp Fiction being on there. If there is one movie post-Star Wars that I would put on there it'd be that.

I took "influential" to mean filmmaking, not American culture. If it was supposed to be about influence on American culture, foreign films would be almost nonexistent. When I look at the list I see either movies that revolutionized how movies were made (Birth of a Nation, Metropolis, Battleship Potemkin), inspired

I think just because the criteria is "influential" it automatically lends itself to older films. With something like the Matrix, that's only been around for what, 10 years? A couple years from now and we could have no trace of it in any films. I understand the argument and flicks like Pulp Fiction have some merit, but
