Much as I generally dislike offering compilation albums as entry points for bands, this is one of two exceptions I make (the other being R.E.M.'s Eponymous).

I can see that, although I was fifteen when it came out, so I never had that experience for myself.  But I guess I thought this list was supposed to be PG-13 movies that adults would find scary—I may be wrong about this; what exactly they were going for doesn't seem to be terribly well-defined.

I think the greater offense is Gremlins being described as chilling.

Also, another thing is that SNL's 66-minute allotment is razor-honed behind the scenes as far as how much time is allowed in each sketch for laughter.  They can't afford a spontaneous line that would kill, even if it only delayed the sketch by a few seconds.  That's how shorter (and usually worse, hence the reason

One of my all-time favorite sketches, mainly because it was one of the only times where it felt like Elliot got to do something he was actually interested in and that matched his style well.  I'm still disappointed by the fact that Elliot (and Garofalo too) had such an undistinguished stint at SNL.

How did "Potato Chip" not make it?  I think of that as the quintessential example of the last fifteen or so years.  Plus, Will Forte's sensibility was so aligned with the ten-to-one type of sketch that he deserves to have at least one representative sketch here.

Not sure if you're being sarcastic or not, but if you read the Times article, the writer notes the sarcasm in her comment regarding such movies.  I'm guessing her taste in movies is generally pretty fair since she's on the record as a fan of I Heart Huckabees and the Coen brothers' oeuvre.

From the comment you replied to, I'm assuming you're talking about the child acting in The Fall (if you're not, you can just ignore everything I say).  It did work out pretty well there but was notoriously an intentional choice on the director's part there, in that he led the girl to believe that the lead actor

Oh my God yes as far as DDL goes.  I could take or leave Hathaway though.  Would I rather she have won for Rachel Getting Married than for a role like this, sure, but I actually think she's a good actress and seems like a nice enough and down-to-earth person.  Whereas DDL is someone who takes himself way too
