That's the one thing I like about the Martin books — main characters can
die. In the WoT books (SPOILER ALERT just in case) the main characters
you start out with in the beginning with Eye of the World make it all
the way through the end of the series. They all survive the mass chaos,
wars, magical attacks, etc.…

What about The Chronicles of Thomas Convenant? I have the first three books in the series at home, but haven't read them. I know now that has essentially grown to a 10-book series so I'm wondering if they are worth investing time in them.
