It doesn't detract from the importance of criticism, which is more than a consumer report, but rather a discussion of the way art is at a specific point in time.

An Evening With Kevin Smith
proves that he's more of a personality than a filmmaker, but I still admire this film more than Scott. Maybe its just a Jersey thing, but there were tons of times in this movie where I was reminded of a similar situation or story I've heard. And while the dialogue isn't realistic, I

I was actually at Monster Mania Con 10, a horror convention in NJ, and Keith David and Roddy Piper were both guest. They were asked about the cripple fight and said they'd never seen it. Both really nice guys, too, although Piper seemed beat up from his wrestling days.

On the Waterfront
Although that's a movie that's much more ambivilant about it's pro-McCarthy message, along with a genuine pro-worker message. Still, every time I see this perfect film, I enjoy it without entirely embracing it.

So is the new Van Sant film in the fashion of his last two or three films, or is this more of a movie-movie, because it doesn't sound like there is a plot from the review. Or when you said it was accessable, did you mean more in the emotional sense rather than this being a traditional hollywood picture
