I think that's part of the problem that some black people had with the Cosby Show - that they didn't seem "other" (thus pandering to whites' comfort) and therefore didn't reflect what was "really" happening in Black America.

Cosby show was great, if a little syrupy.   Like a lot of shows it was better during from the beginning to about slightly past the midway point, though I'd argue all the seasons are at least very good.

I think most of us realize this, but since Latina/o-ness is often associated with somewhat darker-than-"white" skin, and since they're trying to get the point across to children who might not be keen to the very wide range of Latina physical appearance, you'd think they'd do something to make Sofia more "obviously"…

This "could" work.   I don't know what to say.   Epps is a fair actor, but he's never been in anything where he really needed to stretch himself (even the sell-out comedian role in the 'Sparkle" remake which was supposedly a dramatic role), much less inhabit the persona of a legendary figure.  I hope the impetus…
