Pete did not marry Trudy for money; at that point he was still expecting an enormous inheritance.  If anything, Trudy married Pete for his name (or rather his mother's name).  But Trudy miscalculated for once in her life and bet on the wrong horse.  She won't make that mistake again in her future.
