Well, maybe U2's song was an outtake, but it really didn't EXIST anywhere until the soundtrack. It was a new song, for all intents and purposes.

Agreed. I just watched the OT over the past few days, and started thinking of how many individual, iconic elements he created, and we've all taken for granted for decades.

I saw a performance with a then-new Pluto added. It wasn't long after that that Pluto's status as a planet was demoted. Convenient, since other than the novelty of new music, that piece didn't fit at all with the rest.

I'm not sure why, other than maybe it could have been done differently/better. I fully expected they'd appear. After all, R2 has appeared in every other one, and 3PO only missed TFA.
