As far as I'm concerned
there's no need to be an apologist for liking this episode, Todd.
Todd's talking about his "wife" again.
Worried about Peter
First of all, I'm on Team "Bolivia": 1. It's the show's own term for "Bad Olivia"; 2. As another commenter pointed out, she's not a fake Olivia; 3. It's the best pun.
Hey, everybody, it's That Guy.
From a mile away
I just wish they hadn't telegraphed the resolution of the Phil storyline so soon. Claire was SO convinced that Phil was going to bomb that obviously he was going to be a hit; otherwise you have no pay-off. Still, it was a great resolution, which led to one of the solid, heartwarming family scenes MF…
Eat the Sword
What makes the catchphrase running gags on "Cougar Town" really funny to me is the fun the writers take with the obvious incongruity. By the end of an episode, characters are using that episode's catchphrase who should have no business even knowing about it, much less using it (eg Kylie).
A little Sue goes a long way
Midway through the episode I was wondering why I was enjoying it so much and I realized it was because Sue was absent. I like Sue OK, but quite often the character grates on my nerves, particularly in episodes where she serves no other purpose than to have a "Sue moment" to appease the…
Wake me when something happens
Stan Lee announcing new creative projects every few minutes reminds me of how Michael Jackson would often travel to a foreign country and announce he was going to build a theme park there. After a while the announcements just become white noise that lulled us to sleep. Nothing of any pop…
Retire Kristin Wiig
Another example of the overuse of Kristin Wiig: Why do they have her playing Christine O'Donnell? With her long, angled, skeletal face she looks absolutely nothing like the cherubic, round-faced O'Donnell. I know SNL impersonators don't always look like their subjects, but Wiig is so opposite of…
Damn you, ABC PR dept.
I hated that ABC spoiled the best sight gag of the episode — Luke running into the wall — by showing it in promos right before the episode began.
Agreed on Tampa (I'm from Pensacola). Disagreed on humor in unjustified mistreatment.
Tom foot wine
The group's treatment of neighbor Tom is beginning to border on cruelty and even some bullying. I realize the narrative advantage to having a foil for the group, so they need to either 1. Tone down the cruel behavior or 2. Ramp up Tom's creepiness.
Cuando?
Given the church and golf angles, are we to assume that this episode took place on a Sunday? Was the bathtub leak so bad that Claire couldn't wait for a weekday when the plumber wouldn't cost twice as much? And does Jay golf at a club so exclusive that NOBODY else is on the course on a Sunday (and he's allowed…
Agreed.
Emma Roberts is becoming kinda creepy
I like Seth Meyers.
Emma Stone is destined for a fine career, a detour in a Thankless Girlfriend Role notwithstanding. At the very least, she'll have the career Lindsay Lohan wishes she had.
Maggie Gyllenhall in Dark Knight actually made me miss Katie Holmes.
I wish Emma Roberts would stop staring at me
First of all, Sean O'Neal, you deserve one of those Nobel Prizes they're handin' out. Your Newswire posts are (insert a superlative that's heartfelt, appropriately gushing but not too gay).
Oh, and by the way…
By the way, excellent post, Todd.
