Paths of Glory is a great early Kubrick. It's pretty much the movie that ensured he'd be Douglas' pick for director of Spartacus after the first director bailed.
Oh there's a lot of subtlety in Eisenstein's films too. But they're all compositional: How he frames certain characters, their costuming, whether or not this shot is a reference to a certain popular painting… the propaganda is thuddingly direct, but there's other stuff working behind that.
The Edmund Meisel score? Yes that is the best way to watch Battleship Potemkin.
