@avclub-6a468de7d95c61884c9375028e903849:disqus Woo, shit yeah I never tire of hearing people on the internet crusade against people crusading on the internet. Where would we be without you? Probably somewhere with greater self-awareness.

I like that they have her married to a woman. I can't tell you number of maddening conversations I've had with people conflating gender and sexual dysphoria. The notion of someone transitioning to where they're in same-sex relations for some reason really confuses people.

Good stuff I honestly hadn't considered, not nitpicky in the least. I wonder if Laverne Cox's background as a stylist (she produced and hosted a makeover show) is what informs that aspect. I imagine she's very involved in how the writers treat the character.

@avclub-7706d2dc2da6837340effd985dc620b6:disqus I think I have the benefit of being both collected and able to write it out. When I (and I suspect most) are emotionally venting aloud, my train of thought would sound much like this transcript.

I'm not going to adopt the role of being a mouthpiece for Kanye West, but one can certainly explain their feelings and motivations while still being apologetic about how it came across and who it got wrongfully directed at. I don't see any necessary conflict or disingenuousness there.

Murray—Absent.

I noted something similar in another one of the show's comment sections, I think that's a perfectly fine approach especially if you're explicitly out to draw in a white bougie audience: Here's someone for you to identify with and see this foreign world through their eyes. But while individual episodes might put Piper

Well you're right that's unfair of me trying to have it both ways. What I should have said is that I don't think anyone feigning bewilderment is necessarily racist but I do think there's a racist impulse in society to make the angry black man seem crazy and irrational. I'll completely own that assessment.

That's nice, you should take that up with someone making the argument, because, once more, I'm not actually agreeing with Kanye, just saying it's a perfectly comprehensible train of thought (I didn't read it more than once) and it's irksome that people are pretending otherwise.

You can agree with Kanye or not, but I don't know why everyone's pretending they don't understand what he's saying. Sure he's emotional and freely ranting, but it's not difficult to get that he wants the industry to celebrate uncompromising work ethic, which is something Beyonce is notorious for and Taylor Swift less

Whoa, where did Woody Allen say he was thinking about going back to stand up? He always fiercely hated it, which is sort of infuriating that he was so effortlessly brilliant at it so quickly.

Yeah Piper is far and away the least interesting aspect of this show, which is a choice I get and I like how they are very upfront about her tourist perspective, but I also can't stand Jason Bigg's character and have zero investment in their relationship drama. I'd rather watch a show where literally any one of the

Exactly, I think even more problematic is the way we romanticize mental illness/depression as some charming or profound eccentricity that gives people these magical powers.

Eh, I think there's a pretty even contrast of creative geniuses that put in steady hours and don't piss off everyone around them, they just don't get the notoriety obviously. Shit, look at the recent Jack Handey profile, seems like a boring old comedy writer who could churn out some of the greatest joke writing of the

It was a sloppy, vague approximation but Sony and NBC executives swore you couldn't tell the difference, which put them in a Catch-22 to hire back Harmon.

Except each episode is basically a movie.

I simply assume anyone who says they're offended about this is lying.

I totally know what you mean and I get fascinated by that sort of thing too. Like that quote had to just come as a fully formed thought or mental picture that made him laugh, and comedy writers pull those from time to time, but to do it with the frequency that he did is pretty crazy.

Oh I know, I meant acting lead. She's incredible and I never cease to be in awe of people from the transgender community living a very public life in the service of raising awareness.
