I appreciate the insight - I didn't have quite the same experience, though.  For me the nadir of the film was the extended sequence in the nightclub, which was exactly the "shitty and mediocre" film you're describing above.  I had a really hard time getting into it.

Not a particularly scary movie, just… perverse?  I can't think of a better way to describe it: Corman takes the decadence of Poe's stories (it's actually two: "Masque of Red Death" and "Hop-Frog") and makes it pop in technicolor.  Price looks almost bored, but it works because it makes his villain come across as blasé…
