[Audiences] have also been conditioned to think of stories about the well-off—even the slummingwell-off—as fundamentally frivolous…. So why do so many cinephiles resist the Arthur Newman kind of stories, and champion films about poverty and desperation?

For me it's just the steady progression of Phoenix' face in that final confrontation with Hoffman, where you can see him wanting to hug, punch, wrestle, laugh, and cry over the course of just a few minutes - and you can finally see just how much pure power Hoffman has over him.  And maybe that's the key to Hoffman's

I remember whole groups of people exiting during Punch Drunk Love, while I was practically applauding with giddiness at how great it was.

I'm glad you said this: "Doom as a rapper is just one of those things that will NEVER sound good to me."  I've tried, I've tried.  Something just doesn't work for me, as much as I appreciate his ambition.  On paper he's exactly what I want out of hip-hop… In practice, I just can't.

Yeah, I'll admit I liked Arrested Development when they came out and I was not the savviest listener - but in retrospect it's not just the self-righteousness that grates, it's the condescension they have for anyone not similarly enlightened.  Even in "Tennessee" I have a hard time getting past lines like the very one

Let's put it this way: when both Noel and Scott talk about the off-putting New Age cheesiness of the movie, that's a feature drawn faithfully from the book, not added extraneously by the directors.  So it depends on your tolerance level for that sort of thing.

Nick Nolte is a superb actor (sorry, Busey!), but otherwise, yeah.

I don't see it as fearful at all.  It's pretty obvious that much of gay cinema is intended for gay audiences - certainly straights are 'allowed' to watch it, but it's not for them.  The gay films made for a broader are audience usually come via compromises like no physicality, muting 'the gay stuff', making the film
