Oh I'm sure there are other references, but the plot of the movie - a guy with a mysterious past who bonds/falls in love with a woman he ultimately can't have (because she's married and he's too "bad" a man for her) but also bonds with her son, and goes to war with the evil guys to protect the boy and his mother, and

Drive's plot is essentially the plot of Shane.  Right down to the (spoiler?) ambiguous riding/driving-off-into-the-distance-with-a-maybe-mortal-wound ending for the  protagonist.

It's an old theory too.  You can read stuff from the 19th century explaining that the "workhouses" HAVE to be horrible, hideous nightmare places so that they will be an absolute last resort for the desperate.

The other factor is that you don't even have to have this tiny grasp of history, sociology, or empathy to understand why you can't use certain terms with certain people, especially in certain contexts.  If, while we're alone, my boyfriend says I'm super sexy, that doesn't mean that it's okay for a random stranger to

So, best case scenario, Paula Deen didn't want a slave wedding, she wanted a nice Jim Crow era wedding when all the servants were from a single race?

I really enjoyed Finn's expression when he got absorbed into the Jake-car.  The ending kind of fizzled for me though.

Abby Normal.

That's what I'd be worried about.  That the person on the other end of the phone starts thinking, "Well this guy's doing it and getting away with it, why can't I?"

I was thinking the same thing.  I can't imagine not liking an episode that had a short interlude which ends with Lemongrab eating his counterpart after destroying a tiny Lemon-grabby doll.

@avclub-39dd889e0ab668280dbd73c93917e652:disqus Oh, then, I apologize for misinterpreting what you said.  I think I've heard terms like "aggressive population control" in other contexts used to suggest really disturbing levels of aggression and control.

The uranium-mining question is a good point.  Though I think that just feeds into the point they were making which is that it's not a perfect solution but it is a "least bad" one.

@avclub-e57f718840a576abbb40a7d046c4e3b0:disqus My insurance pays for lenses and part of the frames.  That means, when I get my every-two-years eye exam, I get new glasses and new frames too.  I've donated my older glasses.

I don't think that's weird.  The movie was very popular and successful.  I still love it.  It's Shakespeare that makes you forget that you're watching A CLASSIC, and just becomes a fun, silly play.

I thought Denzel was great in it.  The only actor who didn't work in that movie for me was Reeves who really did sound like he was reciting his lines by rote.

The fact that he unilaterally spent money specifically intended for his children (rather than a nebulous "inheritance") without consulting his wife, and put his family into debt (and his kids are helpless, dependent members of that family), I think "stole from his kids" is pretty accurate.

I didn't say that them enjoying it made it good or bad, just that watching it with people who were so thoroughly enjoying themselves (laughing at all the jokes, delighted with everything) made the experience more enjoyable.  It probably also made me more open to enjoying the episode.

Maybe I'll give a try again then, and not bow to peer pressure.  I remember really enjoying it when I saw it, and it was the kids' favorite one of the season, but I don't remember it much now.

I watched the Inspector Spacetime episode with little kids and it makes me sad for anyone who didn't.  They loved every second of it and that made me love it.  Haven't watched it since then to avoid having to face it without a childish laugh-track.

Not sure this jives with any Calvinism I've encountered.  They tend to hold the whole original-sin-everyone-is-born-evil thing pretty close.

I don't know.  I don't think there's any such thing as a "cruel" rejection of someone who sneaks into your room and tries to duct-tape your mouth shut.  For me that scene really showed just how creepy and messed up Ice King is when his crown is on, which heightens the sadness when you see what he can be without.
