There was a lot of talk about it. I remember sitting in an orthodontist’s office and reading an article/think piece about how fucked up the representation of queer/trans people was in like Time magazine or something. This would have been in like 91-92. This specific critique of the movie is as old as the movie is.

What’s most unfortunate is that the book gives a much clearer portrait of Jame- one that is very different than that of the movie. He lives in an impeccably clean home, watching a video clip of his beauty queen mother on a loop. In the desire to conure up a big screen monster, a lot of the character in the source

Nice write up, I particularly appreciate the history, including of the sadly predictable actions of the medical community. I personally find it easy to take a “two things” tact in watching Silence. That ease is a mark of my own privilege and it’s completely understandable someone whose life has been negatively

I think one reason we don’t get as much turnover now is because the film & TV environment now is very different than 10, 15, 20 years ago.  You can go and do other things, including having your own series, without also leaving SNL.

Some of you need to realize that sometimes you can just shut up and respect someone’s opinion, especially if they are much closer to the experience. I might have quibbles with this and I might love Silence to death, but maybe respect a trans person’s views on trans issues and just shut up.

Fewer starring vehicles, Lorne getting older and lazier about dropping people, SNL budget changes and a desperate need for rating post-2008 when they soared high and then returned to their normal spot.

I have a very close trans friend and pretty soon after her coming out we were having a random conversation where she mentioned that she didn’t like movies like Lambs and Psycho — not even that they weren’t good movies, just that she finds a problem with their equation of psychopathy with gender non-conforming

It’s such an odd world when people who have been on for 4 or 5 years are still in newcomer mode. I do think that the show benefits from the energy of newer players. I feel bad for them in that they are still waiting their turn, watching some of the more established players still suck the air out of the room. Yet when

They always feature a queen saying “this is what I do for a living,” whether it’s improv, dance, sing, sew....and they either kill it, or fall flat on their face.

We definitely need more posts on your absolute familiarity with the high-end gym environment.

I think this tends to happen when an anchor is there a long time - Seth spent his last years giggling through many of the pieces (especially if he was good friends with the people who were doing them). I don’t notice it as much with Colin but he does seem to be checked out at this point.

Only if you eat a lot of them at once, or eat pot candy made for those with a medical prescription (much stronger than those available at 21+ legal pot shops). Maureen Dowd wrote an infamous/laughable column about suffering the effects of eating too many edibles at once:

I think we’re close to their being a cast turnover as the younger cast members are getting more and more spots. Ego was in a lot of sketches last night, Heidi’s starting to be slot into supporting roles in group skits, and Bowen’s been given two high profile skits so far. These are all signs showing Lorne is starting

I think it’s because over the past week we’ve all been through the Gorilla Glue story, from being all “that sounds stupid,” to being uncomfortable with the way everyone piled on to such an excessively mean-spirited degree, to having the whole thing resolved by a the kindness, generosity and compassion of the doctor

I was afraid they wouldn’t know what to do with Regina King. I don’t think they quite did, but she lit up the screen and helped pull over a number of sketches through sheer charisma and commitment.

I liked the cringey guys sketch. It reminded me of one they did a long time ago, the douchebag championship with Seth Rogen hosting. Just have three guys being an absolutely awful specific type of person. The setup doesn’t matter. Watching awful people (especially a very particular type of awful we don’t talk about

The Gorilla Glue sketch was difficult as I think there were some good performances there, but it was also one of the meanest SNL sketches I’ve seen in ages.

I was afraid they wouldn’t know what to do with Regina King. I don’t think they quite did, but she lit up the screen and helped pull over a number of sketches through sheer charisma and commitment. The pretty goofy but fun monologue with Kenan seemed to help her loosen up. Her goodnights embrace with Ego Nwodim (who

I thought the Gorilla Glue sketch had some laughs - Kenan excels at playing that type of dumb, loud comedy, and Regina was a good match for him. Chris Redd was also funny. It just went on too long. Cecily’s part could have been taken out with no loss.

The Gorilla Glue spot wasn’t funny. The Pelotaunt ad is the gift every Millennial needs. The Negotiator ..... thanks for making me laugh at something with a cop in it. Ms. King was wasted on this. Maybe next time.
