They're a perfect mixture of old school hip-hop absurd brag rap bravado with political content and even some personal/emotional stuff. It's all a part of what they do.

I'm not nearly as familiar with the original Homes stories as you but I'm particularly drawn to what you're saying about Holmes as champion of the underdog. In Sherlock he's basically a problem solver for the Ruling Class. Sure he does it for "the game" or whatever and not because he really wants to help them but in

Upvoted for the John Watson was never a saint part.

Wow you're pretty judgmental if you think that mild dalliance makes someone irredeemable.

I'm like the billionth person to bring this up but what you've described is very similar to Moffat's run on Doctor Who: moments of brilliance mixed with all this crazy nonsense that they have trouble getting out of.

"A zero" isn't an option on AV Club's grading scale. Do you mean an F?

The consensus on this episode is way more negative than this recap so your instincts are correct. This is the most positive review I've seen, really.

No way. You need to have people who made it deep enough on their season to make some kind of impression. Otherwise you end up with people like Ann/Egg/Her? who made the bland slaw. I refuse to believe she was ever on the show. I don't remember her at al and I've never missed an episode.

I'd be for the site recapping a lot more reality competition shows in general, but they seemed to have gradually all but stopped doing those.

Why on earth would anyone consider it a "guilty" pleasure? I'll never understand this idea that you should feel guilty for consuming certain types of media.

The vast majority of potato salads I've had in the US have featured copious amounts of both mayo AND mustard and some of them were called "German" or "German style."

Both the braid and the denim dress were strange and took the "country" theme too far, but I like Gail in anything and still thought she looked good.

I think both @jmhm:disqus and @Misha20:disqus are onto something. Katsuji's food probably is good outside of the competition. But the limitations of cooking Kosher (and Mexican Kosher at that) are just really different than the kind of stuff you do on Top Chef. It's such a specific niche that I wouldn't be surprised

I don't understand why Amanda and her flavorless slaw weren't on the bottom.

You're probably right about what the casual UK viewers want. Here in the US I encounter a lot of people who have some interest in the show and like other sci-fi/fantasy/genre stuff but the general hangup they have (and I had until I started watching 6 or so years ago) is that they think Doctor Who will be too goofy

These boards are dominated by hardcore lifelong Doctor Who fans, as they should be, but episodes like this present a problem. As longtime fans who are well attuned to how silly and ridiculous the show can be accept them as decent, if not great, outings. However, ask yourself this question: Would this be the episode

I thought the actress playing Lucy was struggling with the American accent and it was doing something very strange to her line readings.

Dude, get a grip. Just as with the whole Clark Kent/Superman thing the whole thing is creepy and weird. We just accept as a genre trope or whatever but it is creepy and obsessive and stalkery. Basically, Grant's been in love (or lust or obsession) with this girl since Middle School age and is never man enough to do

I've only seen every episode of the show since Matt Smith started but I agree that this was a low point for that run of the series. I wouldn't be surprised if it was the worst episode of post reboot Who as well.
