Stefan didn't necessarily respect her decisions, he was just too much of a coward to stand up to her. He would rather shit go bad than have Elena hate him. I guess that's the big difference.

They spend a lot of time trying to villainize Mellie which I suppose they do this to make most feel comfortable with how Fitz treats her.
