I don't think Moffat has any trouble going kid-friendly, whether he was told to or not. He has kids himself and readily admits that he writes things for Who inspired by them and, crucially, for them.

I love Law & Order and am still bummed that they cancelled the Mothership instead of SVU. The last season line-up was particularly strong, and it seemed like the writers were proud of what they were putting out.
