This episode is very powerful for all the reasons you stated. Poor Marge, this is one of those episodes that makes you wonder just how much better she could of had it, had she not become Mrs. Simpson.
Pretty sure "Lisa's Rival" was the first episode I watched live, and that would have been when I was either in first grade or Kindergarten.
