Yuen Woo Ping, Sammo Hung, Jackie Chan… these guys were skilled as martial artists, but their training came through the Peking Opera. Lau Kar-Leung, on the other hand, was a true master of Hung Gar kung-fu. When people call him "Sifu Liu" it's not simply a friendly nickname.
