I really think it's much more of a Whale signature - it's no mistake he turns Bride essentially into a black comedy - it's a register he enjoyed working in.

I prefer RADIO PATROL, which I believe Cahn made in between the two.  Really ahead-of-its-time police procedural which starts off light and comedic, but ultimately ends up being even darker than AFRAID TO TALK and LAW AND ORDER.
