o'neal raises a great point: any semblance of a non-mainstream culture was frozen in the early 90's when it was nearly instantly absorbed by the mainstream, so it makes perfect sense that once that era's alt culture has been wholly co-opted, the entire concept of an 'alternative' culture dies.

apparently not! i know the movie is well hated, but i think verhoven knew exactly what he was doing - i don't really understand how a director who's known for making subversive, self aware and cynical satire isn't given more credit for this movie. you're welcome to hate (or condescend) it, of course, i just happen to

tobias *pretty much* just karmically sentenced himself to a long, painful battle with prostate cancer by using that word.

sure. and i'm not saying your opinion 70mm was an inappropriate choice is necessarily wrong… but it sounds like you're arguing that the use of shallow depth of field with 70mm is by default the result of a mistake or lack of technical understanding. i'd argue that it could just as easily be attributed to an aesthetic

sounds like you have a lot of insight, but i can't help but wonder if you're selling anderson a little short as far as what his research, expectations and execution resulted in. i would imagine that, in reality, he was going for some sort of amalgamation of a '50s look and a more modern one, which i'd say he achieved.
