I’d guess (in the UK) somewhere around the B7 era. That’s when the A4 became a viable competitor to the 3 series (instead of just an over priced passat) and when the pissed-off sales reps started to migrate over from BMWs.

I saw one of these parked on the side of the road in downtown Ann Arbor the other day, and nearly crashed because I had a crisis.
