Basically Wal-Mart had to pay a settlement of lost wages and damages because they shut down the store. Probably made no difference to the company, but that's what I recall.

They did lose a suit in Canada, except the government has no power to make them reopen the store.

Not surprising to me in the least. Wal-Mart has been doing the same thing for years, with some evidence in the case of the Quebec store that was shut down for successfully unionizing. I have also heard anecdotal stories from a few people who have worked in higher positions in Wal-Mart stores.

This is why I'm glad I live in Canada. If I call in sick because I'm ill, especially in food services, I can't be fired. If I'm playing hookey, hell yes I can get fired, but even without government mandated sick days I can't be fired for calling in sick.
