I understand why Anno wants to do it but I also understand why Miyazaki doesn’t. Nausicaä is a favorite of mine but it’s also a film that already exists and has little that could be improved upon. Why try to recapture the magic in live action?

The original is fucking great! Would love to see what Anno could do with it. Could be cool. Budget would be a massive concern, though.
I felt a twinge of pain just reading that headline. More than even the Akira live action remake idea, this seems impossible to result in a *good movie*. I don’t get why it seems impossible to love and appreciate a thing nowadays without wanting to remake it but worse. I absolutely adore Nausicaa, it’s one of my…
So when you mention the ‘original’, are you referring to the animated movie or the manga? The animated film we’re all familiar with is actually an adaption itself. How is a live action adaption less justified than an animated one?
A prestige-budgeted series or miniseries based on the manga, rather than the film, would potentially work.
I mean, he can want to. He shouldn’t. And it shouldn’t happen. But he can want it all he likes.
Those movies are on the whole pretty crappy
It’s not “self-importance” if you’re actually important.
To be honest I don’t think the current state of Japanese cinema can take the material, they’ll put a bunch of wigs on actors pushed by the marketing people and do very bad cgi.
No thanks, don’t need it. There’s a reason Hayao doesn’t want it and it’s because we don’t need it, it would end up less than the original, less than originally hoped, less than everything. There’s no need. Just the same as there’s no need for Disney to go through their entire catalog one-by-one and remake everything…
Just like for Akira, the only sensible thing to do with Nausicaa is to adapt the full manga as an anime series (great movies, but they feel a bit short when you know the full story from the manga). Leave the live-action adaptation ideas, they almost never work (although I recognize that they can be lucrative). Even…
“My echo chambers agree that this is an issue that doesn’t effect us and is therefore a non-issue.”
What a shitty way to minimalize valid concerns.
*wiggly hand gesture*
That’s absolutely fair and I think at most times in history i’d agree with you. I think, however it’s unique that I’m coming to these stories in the time that i am when there is such a plethora of ‘black trauma as entertainment’. It’s that exacerbating factor that makes it harder for me to engage with stuff that…
Black people doing weird, awesome, heroic, and magical shit, without needing to deal with the baggage of racism.
The idea is that there needs to be both kinds of stories. And many other kinds of stories, too!
yeah but see here’s the thing, the moment you try to make a black character who doesn’t have to deal with that, you get a bunch of people whining about how unrealistic they are and how they do nothing to spread awareness of issues. you really cant make everyone or really even a majority of people happy. there are…
Oh I’m so glad WB investigated and found nothing wrong...
Perhaps someone needs to hold a discussion with Johns about his having mastered Black culture...
