I guess you are talking about Apple Software Update on Windows, which isn't seamless because Apple don't write Windows. But it is no more or less annoying than Oracle Java or Adobe Reader/Flash updates.

Exactly, the Linux one is completely biased.

So you support dozens of teachers who still don't know you can use more than one finger on the trackpad, not dozens of teachers who still don't know you can use more than one finger on the mouse as you stated initially. That's why I offered the info about the scrollbars.

- sudo defaults write

They all have the latest magic mouse?

I think they realised they let people down with Leopard's "Top Secret" features which clearly had to be canned to make time for the iPhone, which had to be their no. 1 priority at the time.

Desktop Linux almost always looks crude aesthetically, no matter what theme you apply. ;)

Lion will apparently detect the scrolling device and change the scroll bars to show by default if appropriate.

Full screen is an option, not a requirement. It makes sense for some things, less sense for others. And IDE or video editor are two good examples. A Mail client less so.

Why wouldn't the placeholder be $9999 so no one would buy it?

Because it would cost money to bring the A game to both platforms. It would slow them down because any services they want to build would have to be built for two platforms. Not to mention the developer/consumer confusion.

Apple are taking a hit on their margins to grow the iOS ecosystem.

Only if they ship it with sandpaper to make your fingers smaller so you can use it ;)

But crucially runs all the iOS apps and works with all the iOS accessories. ;)

Looking at the track record if you are fussed about getting updates Apple looks the only safe bet to get at least one major revision. All their phones so far have had at least 2 major revisions.

The logic is pretty sound:

If they get the pricing right on PAYG then HP have just cornered the teenage market. Could be a good strategy…

Apple have buying power few of their rivals can match.
