True, and I think he got caught up in the post-Trump GOP shitshow.  The Ed Emmett I met in 2015 was spending his speeches telling people that Obama was a great guy and Fox News was lying to them.  But he refused to distance himself once the GOP became the party of Trump and that did him in.

Yeah, my mom was bummed about him too. But he should have run as an independent and distanced himself from republicans if he didn’t want to be one of them.

I’m . . . I’m a little sad that Ed Emmett lost. He was the one Republican in office that I didn’t feel was a complete chode. Happy for Lucy Hildago! But sort of sad about Ed Emmett. (Although part of that is because I would use Ed Emmett as an excuse when anyone would accuse me of voting blindly for Democrats. “Not

Hi. Texan here. Voted for Beto. Doing what I can to break the Tea Party’s dominance of Texas. You’re welcome.

It’s worth noting that Harris County has a larger population than 25 states. For all the “buh huh, Texas sucks” people, especially those on the East Coast, imagine that your happy little blue state got squashed together with, like, Kentucky, Tennessee and Indiana, and let me know how think your elections would go?

Yes you are making a good point. I think a lot of the fundamentalism comes about because women were given no options for so long, and also they had real reason to distrust a medical establishment that mostly did not listen to them. Things are better now but still not perfect. So a lot of this bullshit is reactionary-

Things can go badly pretty quickly during a birth. The best thing would be to give birth at a hospital that accommodates midwives, so that people could have the option of both. I wouldn’t do a home birth because I need to have someone suable if something goes wrong. And if I happen to need a blood transfusion or other

I just...this baby died of privilege. That’s exactly what this is and it’s gross and sad.

It’s the level of science denial that greatly disturbs me. Being educated about pregnancy and not allowing doctors to short-circuit a natural birth in the interest of preserving their golf schedule is all good. Walking away from even the most rudimentary assistance is pure insanity. Even a midwife with only the most

Yeah I would think so too. Given that midwifery has been around FOREVER because women have always preferred to have other women helping them give birth. Because doing it yourself is RIDICULOUS.

Yep. Homebirth is taking unnecessary risks at the expense of your child for your own “birth experience”. In my opinion, you have failed the very first test of parenting by doing that. No baby is going to remember their birth.

For the Texian Jezzies amongst us:

Nice analogy!

Unless they bound their bodies together so they’d be found together.

I mean, being a woman in Saudi Arabia sounds enough to me

How does Saudi Arabia find out about someone applying for political asylum in the United States? Do we usually notify the country of origin that one of their citizens is trying to apply for political asylum? That seems...dangerous.

The original doesn’t really glorify shootings either, or if it does it’s to make a bigger point about indifference in the face of nihilism. Wouldn’t be hard to update that message for our current culture, but that would be far to political and divisive unlike just making the bad guys a bunch of fat, queer, POCs.

I only watched the first ep, but I imagine it’s what rich old crypto-fascist fucks whose grandchildren are enrolled at Exeter think modern public school is like.

And, just to be clear, what I said wasn’t a criticism of public defenders. It’s a job that generally good people do for little money and even less appreciation. They’re just wildly disadvantaged - along with their clients, of course - compared to private criminal defense attorneys hired by the rich.

Oof, that rings all too true. It is so stupid and awful, the way our courts are so overtly rigged in favor of those with disposable income... It’s downright unconstitutional, if you ask me.
