I would recommend the film Barefoot Gen for Elementary age and up. Gen is around the same age in these books, so children/students can relate to his motivations and action.

It is quite similar to Graveyard of the Fireflies, but Barefoot Gen was originally written for this age group, whereas Graveyard of the Fireflies…

Also interesting when you think that Mizuki was not even remotely financially successful until his mid-40s, or so. Couple that with that fact that the first 40 years of his life mostly sucked.
