Yes, but gorillas in captivity can live to 50+. The oldest one apparently lived to around 55... I hope Koko gets at least another ten years of happiness and kittens.

Koko is kind of up there in her years though. Their average lifespan is 35-45 years, and Koko is 44.

Honestly, I’ve wondered that, too. It never made sense that the kitten was allowed to run around outside where it could get hit by a car. I know at the time outdoor cats were the norm, but if your very special gorilla has a particular attachment to that cat, maybe you’d want to keep it safe?

Confession time: I did this when I was about 10. My mother had a shelf that she kept some of her (many) tchotchkes on, and I was getting ready to leave for school, and I totally hit my head on it and the shelf fell. Something might have broken. I didn’t want to be late to catch the bus, so I ran out the door.

They tried to have her breed before but it was unsuccessful. I remember watching a documentary about her in anthropology in high school. If I remember correctly I think Koko and the male gorilla saw each other as family and wouldn’t reproduce.

She wanted to, but apparently the male gorilla they brought to her didn’t respond to her advances because she was too forward. :/

Koko has wanted a baby, that’s why they got her the kittens, but she’s rarely shown ‘romantic’ interest and has never conceived. Adoption hasn’t been possible yet, either.
