I actually don't know if certain fans would have been any happier with that though. Yes, it's less *final* than killing him off but I imagine the general anger of a certain part of the fandom would have been pretty much as angry had they just broken up.

The show was responsible for me calling my little brother Beaver for years because my elder one is called Richard. To this day my mom still thinks it’s because of the animal.
