Most of the cities in Texas will be very liberal (Houston had the first openly gay mayor of any major city, currently has an African-American mayor), and most of the rural areas will be very conservative (though in the Hill Country there are plenty of hippy towns). But that’s true even for New York state, go upstate

Yeah, same. Never seen that in Texas, been here for a pretty long time.

There’s at least one woman who’s alive only because 9/11 is her birthday. She worked at one of the offices in the towers (I think Cantor Fitzgerald) and had invited people over in the evening to celebrate, so in the morning she tidied up her apartment and left for work later than usual. Because she cleaned, she wasn’t

My brother’s birthday is Sept 12. It was a weird day to celebrate that year.

I am from Texas and I can assure you that if anything, you usually don’t realise it’s 9/11 unless you turn on the TV and the history channel is replaying the footage.

I’m Texan and I’ve never heard anyone act like this is a holiday at all. Not reverently or celebratory. It’s just a day. Your in-laws are screwing with you.

Native Texan, family throught SE Texas and Central Texas with relatives in the Ft. Worth area....never heard of anyone “celebrating” 9/11 like it’s a holiday. And I grew up with people that drove around with Confederate Flags in their trucks and own dozens of guns. I call bullshit on this.

Yea, that’s not accurate. I live in Austin and there is literally none of that here.

Where just outside of Austin? I live just outside of Austin and I have a car and I want to drive to see this with my own eyes.

Also a native Texan, also have never seen a 9/11 nationalismgasm.

You know, over the years that I’ve been commenting on Gawker media sites I’ve noticed there’s a shit ton of hate for Texas, even though there are a lot of active users from Texas. It’s a damn shame that our state government’s infamy runs before us, and of course people’s generalized uninformed prejudice.

Also a Texan, DFW, I’ve never witnessed this.

My aunt DECIDED to get married on September 11th. We all told her it was weird. Her husband died of a heart attack and she stole my cat. These are facts.

I live in Texas and have yet to see anyone make a big deal or even mention it other than on Facebook. Where are they from?

True story, I dated a guy who lived down the street from the ice cream truck depot in the West Village. Around 5pm, every summer evening, they all roll out as an adorably coordinated sugar-fueled cheer army. The jingles were always delightful because even though they were loud, they just sound like happiness.

Same here, not a native but have lived in Texas for 10 years now. Never seen anything made of it beyond a moment of silence at a football game.

Yeah I’m from Texas. That’s bs.

Yeah, I was even a Texan out in the boonies (West Texas) for 8 years for college, and I really didn’t notice much of anything. Which means I was in a college town, so maybe not super representative of the state at large, but still, definitely not my experience.

Shoot out to Illtown all day, but damn Aliya this article was kinda wack. You just compared 3 alleged criminals with a guy who may/ or may not have cheated on his wife. Slow news day much?!?

In a different way, the same thing applies to Bill Cosby. I heard rumors about his alleged inappropriate behavior when I was in my early 20s. But again, it was whispers. And again, what was I supposed to do? Research what I heard? Take my thoughts to the authorities?
