The thing is, though, a bachelorette is whatever the fuck you want it to be, including nothing at all. There isn’t a “narrow set of socially approved ways” to do it. Vapid, inch-deep think-pieces like this want you to believe there are, because it generates clicks and outrage. Believe me, “thinking too much” is not

“Plus, it’s the 100th year of the First World War”

You know what’s “textbook passive-aggressive behavior”?

Sounds like you have a fascinating job! Santé :)

I actually think the fact that “it can happen to anyone” thing is part of it. The tendency to alienate the sick or shut down the discussion, or to blame the victim (“your negative attitudes caused your tumour”) can operate as self-defense: if I don’t see it, it’s not there, and if I assign it a foreign cause, it won’t

I’m with you on (white) men getting unlimited chances despite drug issues and domestic violence record- I just don’t see it publicly carrying over into different expectations *specifically* related to cancer diagnoses.

But we’re coming at it from different points, and, I think, talking about two different things.

SUCH AN AMAZING REPLY.

It’s frustrating to read any denial of this, because it’s really the perfect example of the patriarchy being bad for everyone.

I wholeheartedly disagree with you. It’s shitty for everyone. Men and women share a lot of the same challenges that come with cancer, as well as some gender-specific ones; even the whole “warrior” cliche you bring up can be a problem for both (“you’re not sick, you’re a soldier! so toughen up and stop crying!”).

Born in India, to an Indian father. Sir Ben’s birth name is Krishna Pandit Bhanji.

You know you’ve reached a new stage of life when you start thinking, “Calvin’s parents don’t actually look that old, his dad is like 36, max...”

Thanks!

What is it called? I have the Ultra one but I find it heavy.

Not nitpicking, just letting you know since you’re in the industry and might need to write copy: “saigner” means “to bleed” (infinitive), “saigné/saignée” means “bled”, past tense masculine/feminine. Grapes are masculine, FWIW. Appropriate...?

Very interesting post! There are so many lovely rosé wines out there,

It’s a gushy-coo 1950s song about worshiping your man and tailoring yourself to snare him and keep him happy, covered by Ani DiFranco and filmed as bridal drag. It’s so, so over-the-top treacly that, coming at the beginning of the movie, it sets you up to see that set of cultural expectations subverted and skewered.

Or because it’s parody.

Can’t they both be awful?

Only those with training wheels, IMHO.

It’s illegal in many metro areas to cycle with headphones in. And blaring your music as a motorist is shitty behaviour, but it doesn’t deafen you by literally plugging your ears.

If you’re an asshole who needs to broadcast their noise to the world. So damn annoying.
