I don’t know what that specific sheriff told his deputies to do, but his behavior was absolutely out of line with post-Columbine law enforcement protocol.

Current active shooter doctrine is to enter and engage the shooter IMMEDIATELY, without waiting for backup, and without securing the scene. I cannot speak to this individual’s training, but his behavior was entirely out of line with commonly accepted police doctrine for that situation.

To think, there was a time when public servants actually experienced a sense of duty to people other than themselves.
