I have to make a conscious effort to not emulate the accents and speaking patterns of the places I live because it reads pretentious, even when it’s not intended. 

Murakami has always written awful sex scenes like that. In every one of his books (it seems), there is, at some point, a character who is clearly a stand in for Murakami fucking some gorgeous, young woman in incredibly graphic and obnoxious ways. 1Q84, in particular, has some of the worst sex scenes I’ve ever read.
