Funny thing is, as I recall the novel suggested that Bobby was actually pretty good before Laura corrupted him.
I think you should at least watch the film - that quickly gives you a basis around the characters and settings.
Personally, I really like that they are moving from beyond the town. Same with the Secret History - when they are playing for massive stakes it is kind of silly to have everything happening in some small town.
TBH I think claiming they were integral to defeating Sauron was just a deflection coupled with the logical thought that they couldn't all have been working for Sauron. The easterlings who helped defeat Sauron could have been working for an equally evil fallen wizard as Sauron after all.
It was a globalized world. They were actually Filipinos I double-checked on Wikipedia. It seems the film made Rico an Argentine though.
