I believe the general consensus is that it made money - it simply didn't make enough money for them to risk hundreds of millions of dollars on sequels as they were worried the sequels would make less money.

I think that was actually covered - the point was that they were dealing with alternate timelines at this point IIRC and that certainly seemed to make as much sense as anything post T2.
